| The local
government elections took place in the Republic of Ireland
on Friday, 11th June 2004.
Voters went to
the polls in strong numbers as county, city, urban,
town and borough councillors put their seats on the
line, and it is Fine Gael and Sinn Fein who will be
happiest with the results which saw a dramatic fall
for Fianna Fail. The main government party shouldered
a mid-term backlash, losing close to 90 local government
seats in the process, as the main opposition party closed
the statistical seat gap to a mere eight.
The growth of
Sinn Fein was expected to be reflected in a major seat
increase that propels the party to fourth overall in
the standings, though the recovery of Fine Gael from
their disastrous general election showing of 2002 will
make for an interesting run-in to the next national
election within the coming three years.
Due to the end
of the dual mandate, sitting members of the Oireachtas
(Dail and Seanad) were unable to run for election.
